Another fairly busy day today for me as regards official club business. As a result of still not having found opposition for our game on the 1st of Feb I was still trying to chase up any lead possible. Picking up a contact from Alwin I was put in touch with James Moncreiff, Captain of the pretty originally named Intra Mural side Arthur’s Feet. I dropped him a line and he seemed pretty enthusiastic for the fixture, until once again the Saturday fixture reared its ugly head again. What is it with people playing football on a Saturday! Do they not actually follow their professional local team like all other real people. However, in spite of this obstacle he did assure me that there would be scope for a game as he should be able to rouse enough lads to put a team out. I’ll be hearing tomorrow from him for definite tomorrow, and you can be assured you will be the first to hear.
I took the opportunity to check out our next opposition online at their website. From the off they make a pretty big claim to be “The Best Team Sponsored by a Ghost Tour Company in the Edinburgh University Inter-Mural League Saturday Division One”. Now who says football chants aren’t catchy. So taking note of this fact for my dossier I set to checking out their squad list, alongside a deep squad boasting several big lads from the West, and a man bearing an uncanny resemblance to a Mr Motivator DVD, was a familiar face. None other than current front-runner for the Inaugural Staggs Pint D’or Gordon Mackenzie. Next to a fetching picture of Gordon set against a backdrop of one of Edinburgh’s numerous beautiful tower blocks was a statement that revealed just how much of a coup his signing was. Described as a “versatile Plocktonian that has dazzled in the yawning chasm that has been the space between 1811s midfield and defence. A worthy player, skillful and physical, great things are expected of him from the season to come”. Well, here’s a delivery for the Witchery Boys, a generous helping of “get it roond ye”.
However, the most important piece of business of the day was the appointment of Michael Kinsella as player/manager. On a long term contract Michael will continue to put in his shift between the sticks and also manage the team from the back, probably the best position on the field to run the team from. It makes me extremely happy to be able to pass the torch to Michael as it gives me the opportunity to focus my attention on the field to my own performance rather thanĀ playing around with diamonds and 1-2-1-3-1-2′s whilst taking care of a burly left sided midfielder chancing his arm at a sly wee goal. As well as this I can rest assured that the job has gone to the right man as Michael brings a wealth of experience to the role as well as a deft understanding of the sport that can only come from enjoying the game from top to bottom as a keen follower of Brentford and an excellent Edinburgh side beginning with H. It is surely a proud day for the club as Michael is the head of a footballing family that is rivalled only by the Maldini clan, with both his sons first team regulars, and one of them our Top Goalscorer.
In lieu of a post tomorrow i’m going to take this opportunity to wish the lads good luck, and also say that on Monday you can expect a massive influx of content, including a match report, and probably some photos of the boys and the unveiling of our new gaffer.
Cheers, JD
